Primarily a road ride, it features some of the most iconic stretches in the Northeast—starting with Lincoln Gap, the steepest paved mile in the U.S. With an average gradient of 15% and a max grade hitting 24%, this brutal ascent over the Green Mountains is a challenge to simply ride up.
But Lincoln Gap isn’t the only epic climb. Next up is Appalachian Gap—the iconic stage 3 finish of the Green Mountain Stage Race for more than 20 years. Much of the climb holds steady at a 10% grade, with the final quarter mile ramping up closer to 15%. Widely considered Vermont’s most famous mountain gap, App Gap rewards the effort with sweeping views in both directions—east and west.
From the summit, brace yourself for an exhilarating descent past the world-renowned Mad River Glen ski area, then wind your way back into Waitsfield and the heart of the Mad River Valley.
